Collections Mapping

An introduction to mapping exercises from Sandy Nairne, Director of the National Portrait Gallery
March 2008

I am pleased to introduce the Subject Specialist Network, Understanding British Portraits, which aims to encourage the study and enjoyment of the diverse range of portraits to be found in the UK.

One of the important aims of Understanding British Portraits is to create a database of all portrait collections throughout the UK. This is an ambitious task; we hope to gather information on portraits that form part of major art collections, as well as the smaller and less well-known collections, comprising just one or two examples perhaps, in the care of libraries, archives, societies, charities and private companies or houses. We are also compiling a database of those who hold relevant expertise in portraiture, such as museum curators, independent researchers, educators and academics. This mapping exercise will facilitate a sharing of skills and knowledge that will enhance the future research, display and use of portrait collections.

I would like to invite you to take part in this project by registering details of portraits in your care, or your own expertise, online. We have endeavored to make this process as simple as possible, and you can find further details below.

I very much look forward to seeing the results, and am confident that the online resource will be an invaluable reference point for all of us when planning future research, displays and learning programmes. May I take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your participation.
