Interpreting Portraiture Collections
Beningborough Hall Case Study
Components of the Project
- The refurbishment and repurposing of seven historic rooms, three of which had not previously been fully open to visitors before.
- The development of a new permanent exhibition with interactive and tactile interpretation and layered interpretation in four of these spaces.
- The installation of two Portrait Explorer terminals in an IT Study room to give greater access to the whole National Portrait Gallery collection.
- The provision of a Pre-School Portrait Playroom where families can relax with toddlers.
- Layered graphic interpretation and a free sound guide (for general and visually impaired visitors) for the house and its portraits.
- The installation of a lift and a new, all-weather low-gradient access path.
- New orientation and welcome graphics throughout the house to help people get the most from their visit and become aware of the NPG's partnership with the NT at the property.
- Recruitment of new enabling volunteers to help people engage with interactives. Developing the role of existing Front of House staff to include routine management of the interpretation galleries.
- New Beningbrough guide-book.
The Pre-School Portrait Playroom has some unusual mirrors, as well as dressing up, jigsaws and other portrait activities for very young children. It is a welcoming space, comfortably furnished in bright colours.
